Why we built Plus — and what makes it different

Two years ago, we sat in a coffee shop in Miami and wrote down everything wrong with online dating for people who have their lives together. The list was long. Too long. Apps that charge $275 a month for a Diamond badge and still can't tell you whether the person on the other end actually looks like their photos. Platforms that started with a genuinely useful idea and slowly rotted into something unrecognizable. Waitlist-gated clubs where getting in matters more than what happens after.

We didn't set out to build another dating app. We set out to fix the one category that every existing player had either abandoned or overpriced into irrelevance.

This is the story of why Plus exists.

The market was broken before we got here

Seeking Arrangement launched in 2006 and genuinely changed how a certain segment of people dated. For the first time, there was a place where successful, generous individuals and attractive, ambitious people could connect without pretending they wanted different things than they actually did. The honesty was the product.

Then Seeking got comfortable. They rebranded, dropped "Arrangement" from the name, and jacked up prices. Diamond membership went to $274.99 per month. They pulled their iOS app. Verification became optional, which meant half the profiles you'd match with could be anyone. The platform that pioneered upfront dating became just another overpriced destination where you couldn't trust what you were seeing.

Secret Benefits tried to fill the gap with a credits-based model. Buy credits. Spend credits to unlock messages. Run out of credits. Buy more. It's the freemium casino approach applied to dating, and it works exactly as well as you'd expect. You end up spending more than a flat subscription would cost, and you never quite know if the person replying is genuinely interested or just generating engagement to keep you buying.

SugarDaddyMeet still exists, technically. The interface looks like it was designed during the Obama administration and never updated. The user base has contracted to a point where most major cities have a few hundred active profiles at best. It's a relic.

On the other end of the spectrum, apps like Raya and The League sell exclusivity. Their pitch is simple: we keep the riffraff out, and in exchange you get access to attractive, high-status people. In practice, Raya is a social media flex where half the users are there to screenshot celebrity profiles, and The League's algorithmic matching feels like it was trained on LinkedIn endorsements. Neither platform asks you to be honest about what you're looking for. They just ask you to be impressive enough to get past the bouncer.

None of these options worked for the person we kept meeting over and over: someone established in their career, clear about what they want in a partner, willing to be generous with their time and resources, and completely unwilling to waste money on platforms that don't deliver.

What we decided to build

Plus is a private dating app for people with more to offer. That sentence took us months to get right, and it still does most of the heavy lifting when we explain what we do.

Private means verified. Every member can verify their photos and their income. This isn't behind a paywall. It's not a premium feature you unlock at a higher tier. Verification is fundamental to how the platform works because trust is fundamental to how good dating works. When you see a verified badge on Plus, it means something. The person looks like their photos. Their financial situation is what they say it is.

People with more to offer means both sides bring something real. Generous members bring financial stability, life experience, connections, mentorship, access. Attractive members bring exactly what the name suggests, plus ambition, personality, and presence. The point is that both people are adding to each other's lives, not extracting from them.

We built Plus around four principles that came directly from our frustrations with every other platform we'd tried.

Attractive members never pay

Not a free trial. Not a limited version with paywalled messages. Full access, unlimited messaging, every feature, zero cost, forever. This was the first decision we made and the one we've gotten the most pushback on from investors.

The logic is simple. Charging both sides of a dating platform is a tax on connection. If an attractive member has to pay $50 or $100 just to respond to messages, some of them won't. That means fewer responses for generous members, which means a worse experience for everyone, which means people leave. Two-sided paywalls are a slow death spiral disguised as revenue.

We'd rather have a platform full of active, engaged attractive members who actually respond to messages. Generous members benefit directly from that, and they're willing to pay for it. One side pays, both sides win.

The pricing had to make sense

Plus Diamond costs $99.99 per month. All features. Unlimited messaging. Full verification access. Priority visibility. Everything.

Here's what that looks like compared to the alternatives:

We're not running a charity. $99.99 is a real price that sustains a real business. But we refuse to charge $275 for something that should cost a third of that. The dating industry has gotten away with luxury pricing on economy experiences for too long. Seeking charges nearly three times what we do and still can't guarantee that the person you're talking to has been verified. That math doesn't work for us, and we don't think it should work for you either.

Verification changes everything

Most dating apps treat verification as a nice-to-have. Upload a selfie, maybe get a blue checkmark, move on. That approach is meaningless. It confirms someone has a face and a phone. It tells you nothing about whether they're who they claim to be in the ways that actually matter.

On Plus, verification covers two things: photos and income. Photo verification confirms you look like your pictures through a multi-step process that's genuinely difficult to fake. Income verification confirms your financial situation through documentation review. Both are optional in the sense that nobody is forced to complete them, but verified profiles get dramatically more attention, so the incentive structure pushes everyone toward transparency.

This matters because the biggest problem in upfront dating isn't finding matches. It's trusting them. When a generous member says they earn a certain amount, is that true? When an attractive member's profile photos look incredible, do they actually look like that? On platforms without real verification, you're guessing. On Plus, you're not.

Why we launched in Miami and Houston first

Every dating app that launches nationally on day one fails. Not some of them. All of them. The reason is density.

If you sign up for a dating app and see twelve profiles in your city, you delete it and never come back. It doesn't matter how good the features are or how clean the interface is. Dating apps are only as good as the people on them, and people only stay if there are enough other people to make it worth their time.

So we picked two cities and committed to making them work before expanding anywhere else.

Miami was obvious. It's one of the most active dating markets in the country, it has a concentration of wealth and attractiveness that maps perfectly to what Plus offers, and the culture is inherently direct. People in Miami don't waste time pretending they want something casual when they want something real, or vice versa. The city's energy matched our product from day one. Houston was less obvious to outsiders but made complete sense to us. The fourth-largest city in America, more Fortune 500 headquarters than anywhere except New York, a massive population of high-earning professionals in energy, medicine, and tech, and a dating culture that's simultaneously ambitious and genuine. Houston also has far less competition from other premium dating platforms, which meant we could establish Plus as the default choice for upfront dating faster than in a saturated market like New York or LA. What Plus is not

We should be clear about a few things.

Plus is not an escort platform. We have zero tolerance for commercial sexual solicitation. Our moderation team reviews profiles and flags activity that crosses that line, and accounts that violate our terms get removed permanently.

We're also not trying to be the biggest dating app in the world. Tinder has 75 million monthly users. We don't want 75 million users. We want a few hundred thousand people who are genuinely aligned with what Plus offers: honesty, verification, and a better experience at a fair price. Scale for its own sake produces the mediocrity that made every other platform disappointing.

And we're not pretending that what we do is revolutionary. The concept of upfront dating where both people are clear about expectations has existed forever. We're just building the best version of the technology layer that facilitates it. Better verification, better pricing, better design, better trust.

The name

People ask about the name. Plus means what it sounds like. Something additional. Something more. People with more to offer, looking for more than the usual. It's also a word that doesn't carry the baggage of "arrangement" or "sugar" or "elite." We wanted a name that felt modern and neutral, one that described the experience without narrowing it. Chemistry, and a yacht in Capri. Turns out, you can have it all.

Where we go from here

We're growing, but deliberately. New cities will open when we're confident they'll have enough members to deliver a great experience from day one. We're building features based on what our actual members ask for, not what looks good in a pitch deck. And we're keeping prices where they are because the moment we start charging $275 a month, we become exactly what we set out to replace.
